On 3 June 2008 the State Government announced that one-megawatt of solar panels would be installed at the Adelaide Showground as part of its upgrade to the Goyder Pavilion and other buildings. At the time it was announced, the $8 million project was the largest rooftop installation in Australia. 10,000 square metres of solar panels has been installed, generating 1,400 MWh of solar electricity – the equivalent of powering 200 SA homes per year. It is saving around 1,400 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
